Customary for MAFA Christmas Committee

I.        Purpose and Scope

Purpose:  To outline the procedures and standards for the process of decorating the altar at Christmas covering Advent through Epiphany Sunday.

Scope:  This document applies to all members of MAFA and any other person handling this process.

 

II.        Budget

No current budget restrictions.

 

III.    Work Instructions : Advising staff, proper placement of traditional items, and storage

 

  • Alter Flowers

In November, check with Office Manager to order evergreens for the altar the first three or four Advent Sundays depending on Thanksgiving and the calendar.

 

  • Christmas Trees

  • Reserve Sanctuary for December 21. Christmas trees to be set-up, unless it falls on a Sunday.
  • In late November, order trees for delivery on December 21.
  • Notify Kathy Ritt to hang bows on December 22 or 23, after the Longest Night service.
  • Set up trees on December 21.  Silver to nobles will be positioned on both sides of the altar.   Place burlap around the base of the trees.  Trim and hang the Douglas firs on both walls of the Sanctuary.
  • Hang bows on the Douglas fir trees.  Red bows for red poinsettias, and gold bows for white poinsettias.
  • Water the trees.
  • Remove bows from trees after the Epiphany Sunday Service and store them in containers.
  • Remove and dispose of all trees from the Sanctuary.

  • Order flowers based on plant size and needs.
  • Request delivery as close to Christmas Eve as possible.
  • Request help by Signup Genius to unpack flowers on the day of delivery and place them in terra cotta pots. Pots are located in the MAFA closet in the sanctuary.
  • Move flowers to the altar and arrange around the silvertip nobles after completion of the Children’s Christmas pageant service, and prior to the 5PM Christmas Eve service.
  • Water and care for flowers according to room temperature and humidity until Epiphany.
  • Congregants may take flowers home after the Epiphany Service.
  • Clean and put away the terra cotta pots.  Storage is located in the MAFA closet in the sanctuary.
